My opinion is that ‘Everyone is Creative’. People might want themselves to be ‘More’ on some specific areas. This can be achieved through various ways like out of box thinking, brainstorming, writing, travelling and getting yourself to actually design. Let me start with an example:
You might be a Lawyer and would like to be add creativity to the design of a graphics that you are making for your new Facebook post. Here, the assumption is that you are a lawyer and have no previous experience of graphic design. Most associate being creative with only aesthetics. However, being creative is far more challenging, where generally the output suggests the quality of the creative process.
One needs to understand that being a lawyer itself is a hell of a job requiring ample amounts of creativity, where the lawyer must creatively find ways of convincing the judge about his stand on the case. Graphic design however comes with a set of different skills, which need to be acquired. Our example can then be broken down into two parts – the design and the execution. Execution is about putting the imagination and the thoughts to a final print/ graphic. We will take this up later.
A design is defined as a plan or specification for the construction of an object or system. It is important to however understand that to become more creative, one must enjoy the process, rather than being too consumed with the result. It feeds into a lot on the designer’s imagination. Which is why, there are creativity muscles which need to be strengthened to ensure someone adds to his creativity, and trust me this isn’t rocket science.
Out of box thinking The approach to starting a design process is sometimes the most critical of all steps in a design process. To achieve that, it is sometimes important to start with a premise which is probably a little unconventional, so as to reach a result which caters to some additional product requirements than others. Out of box thinking means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective. This phrase often refers to novel or creative thinking. Try changing the approach to the graphics you are trying to create. Maybe you are targeting the young millennial lawyers preaching to be correctness in preparing arguments for a particular case. But to get their attention, you might think out of box and use a movie character the target audience relates to, preaching it in a way that can attract their attention.
Brainstorming Brainstorming is step 2 in becoming more creative about a subject one typically doesn’t deal with on a daily basis. Brainstorming with prospective users, stakeholders, target audience and experts makes it easier to come up with the premise on which the design approach is going to be built. It also helps in coming up with an out of the box approach. Brainstorming helps in coming up with multiple design processes and various directions one can go towards creating the ideal output. Logic helps in then streamlining the processes to find the one which one would follow.
Creative writing Imagination sows the seed to becoming more creative. Imagination has two parts – the thought and the output. Human mind is ripe with imagination and everyone imagines several things everyday. Brainstorming and creative writing helps in imagination and streamlining it. But one must keep penning it down or making interim creatives to ensure that the imagination is recorded. Creative writing is a good way of doing so. Creative writing is any writing that goes outside the bounds of normal forms of literature, typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics. Creative writing is the free flow of expression. Most of the highly rated authors and designers credit creative writing as the reason for their fabulous products.
Photography and clicking creative pictures Like Creative writing, clicking pictures also helps in creating a creative bent. One can learn how to click creative pictures by experimentation and practice and like creative writing, clicking creative pictures also depends heavily on out of the box thinking. However, clicking creative pictures is also very technical where one has to be cognizant of the various variable involved like lighting, shutter speed, camera angles etc. It is however a very satisfying and creative process.
Starting to actually design Putting the pen to paper to start design is probably then the most important step in designing. What was just an imagination all this while, starts to take shape. Clicking pictures, brainstorming and creative writing has ensured that the creative juices have flown such that the designer now is happy to move towards creating a prototype. Sketching the initial ideas is the start to this process. After multiple iterations and further discussions will result to the final output.
Travelling Travelling helps open the mind, so one is open to experimentation, exploring different ideas without bias, and considering multiple possibilities. Travelling to different places and meeting different people aligns people to think differently about their lives and their ways of thinking could become open as a result of that. Also, travelling gives time for one to soul search important answers, giving rise to more evolved thoughts. Travelling also can be associated to travelers being more carefree and being more risk averse which shows in the way they find solutions to problems they are designing to solve.
